ANZAC stands for Australia New Zealand army corps
We celebrate ANZAC day because lots of people died and risked their lives for us in WW1.
WW1 started on the 28 July 1914 and ended on the 11 November 1918.
100 444 New Zealand troops and nurses served in WW1.
Over 16 thousand New Zealanders died and round 41 thousand were wounded.
Over 37 MILLION people died or got wounded all over the world.

Poppies
People wear poppies to fundraise for wounded people from WW2.
Other countries wear poppies on the 11th of November to celebrate when
the war ended.
New Zealand and Australia wear poppies in April.
Poppies grow all over the world not just in Gallipoli

Nurses
Woman were not allowed to fight so they contributed as nurses
They were every bit as brave as the men
288 were decorated, 25 died, 423 served in Australia and 2286 served overseas
As nurses they fed and bandaged the injured men.

Life for other people
School children spent their time knitting things for soldiers
People lived in fear for their lives and that of service man & women.
People who were not fighting had black blinds to not let the light escape

Extra
11% of the population of France was killed
116,000 Americans died even though they fought for only 7 months
Russia had the biggest army
